Translink project

Our first project back at uni was to create a new logo for Translink. Here are some of my ideas...
...  the different colour lines of the 't' represent the different Translink services. ie Pink is Metro, navy is N.I railways etc.

Similar to the first idea... the different colours on both of these designs represent the different Translink services. The dots are to represent the stops, similar to the maps you would see for the metro buses.

This next idea represents the idea that Translink is for everyone. From the young to the old, all members of the public can avail of it's services.

diversity...

Belfast has become an increasingly diverse city with a mixture of race, ethnicity and religion. My initial thoughts on this were different hand prints, all different colours to represent the different races within Belfast. Then I had the idea of using different coloured footprints which would represent the different racial groups which walk through, in and around Belfast on a daily, monthly and annual basis.

Here are the different footprints, all in different colours. I have used an outline, to represent the idea that you can see people from the outside but you do not know them on the inside. Therefore they are just a colour, race, religion to the passer by, and nothing else. The outlines, all overlapped also gives a busy and chaotic sense.

This is another of my footprints ideas. This time I have used block colours instead of outline. I like both of these ideas and I am keen to develop and enter one of them for the competition.

everything's changing...

If you walk through Belfast you will notice new buildings, a diverse population, road works, new hotels, new sculptures and lots of scaffolding. Belfast is changing... developing... growing. Whether it be a new hotel in the city centre, or someone from a different ethnic origin walking down the street, you will notice that the Belfast you once knew is becoming a totally different city.

I wanted to convey this sense of change in my pen design. I then thought about how a flower grows and develops. Or a butterfly, starting life as a caterpillar before turning into a beautiful, colourful butterfly. I particularly like the idea of using the flower and the butterfly to portray the idea of change and development.

bout ye big lad?

bout ye? alright mucker? what's the craic?... recognise this Belfast slang? These are word's and phrases that are commonly associated with Belfast. I thought it would be cool to have this on the pen.

I have used the simple 'Helvetica' font as it is bold and straight to the point. A bit like the phrase. I have kept the text black on top of the white background to make it stand out. This is a simple phrase so I thought it appropriate to have the simple blank and white colours.
I am going to consider this for the competition.

music to my ears...

Belfast has a huge music scene, with local bands emerging regularly. Pubs and clubs hold weekly gigs from traditional irish music to the best house music dj's. Events such as Belsonic, held annually at Custom House Square bring the biggest artists to Belfast. Biffy Clyro, Florence and the Machine and David Guetta amongst others bring the people of Belfast together in musical harmony.
My ideas included a guitar, representing local bands to the world famous, Belfast born Snow Patrol and Van Morrison. I also had the idea of writing 'Belfast' on a music stave along with music notes.

initial thoughts...

My first thoughts on the pen project were topics such as music, sport, art, culture and the troubles. After gathering information and visual research I started sketching various ideas. My first idea was the Belfast skyline, which included the city's most iconic buildings and landmarks. City Hall, Harland and Wolff, Albert Clock etc. Perhaps a silhouette of the skyline, or an outline... both ideas I have roughly sketched.
